Ameen Sayani, announcer, radio jockey, compere, was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009
Ameen Sayani and elder brother Hamid Sayani (though not hired directly by Radio Ceylon) became popular by using Radio Ceylon for broadcasting programs like "Binaca Geetmala" (first broadcast in 1952) and "Lipton Ke Sitaare."
Ameen Sayani achieved fame and popularity all across the Indian sub-continent when he presented his Binaca Geetmala program of Bollywood hit songs over the airwaves of Radio Ceylon addressing listeners with his trademark "Behno aur Bhaiyo" (meaning "sisters and brothers").
Between All India Radio (since 1951), AIR's Commercial Service (since 1970) and various foreign stations (since 1976), Sayani has produced, compered (or spoken for) over 54,000 radio programmes and 19,000 spots/jingles according to the Limca Book of Records.
Sayani assisted his mother, Kulsum Sayani (who was awarded the Padma Shri in 1960 for Social Work), in editing, publishing and printing a fortnightly journal RAHBER (1940 to 1960) for neo-literates, under the instructions of Mahatma Gandhi.
