Gadwal Vijayalakshmi

Gadwal Vijayalakshmi (born 1964) is an Indian politician serving as the current mayor of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) since 11 February 2021. 

She became the fifth woman mayor of Hyderabad after winning the Banjara Hills ward as a corporator from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi in 2020. She joined the Congress party in March 2024.

Vijayalakshmi was an American citizen till 2004 before she came to India after her 26-year stay in the USA. An original resident of India, she obtained the US green card in 1988 after she got married and settled there. Later, she took American citizenship in 1999, which she gave up before coming back to India and obtained Indian citizenship in 2009.

She is the daughter of Kancherla Keshava Rao (born 1939) who served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament from 2014 to 2024 and previously from 2006 to 2012. He was associated with Indian National Congress till May 2013 after which he joined Bharat Rashtra Samithi from 2013 to 2024. He rejoined Congress party in July 2024 and was appointed as the Advisor (Public Affairs) to the Government of Telangana with Cabinet status. His BC community (Munnuru Kapu) background has occasionally been mentioned as a factor in political strategy and leadership discussions in Telangana politics.
