Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is a civic administrative body which looks after the administration of Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana State.
GHMC was constituted in the year 2007 by merging surrounding 12 municipalities into the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad which was formed in the year 1955.
The legal framework of Hyderabad's civic administration which was governed by The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Act, 1955 (originally enacted as the Hyderabad Municipal Corporations Act, 1955 / Act No. II of 1956), the original 1955 Act was formally amended and renamed to adapt to a vastly expanded urban footprint.
The Municipal Commissioner is the absolute head of the executive wing, appointed directly by the state government (typically a senior IAS officer).
Following the state's February 2026 trifurcation of the city's administration into three distinct municipal corporations (Greater Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri), the legal mechanisms of the 1955 Act are being replicated across three separate executive jurisdictions to handle Hyderabad’s explosive geometric growth.
To handle the expansion, the government has overhauled the internal divisions:
- Wards: Increased from 150 to 300.
- Zones: Doubled from 6 to 12.
- Circles: Increased from 30 to 60.
- Merged Areas: 27 municipalities (such as Manikonda, Narsingi, Tellapur, Medchal, and Shamshabad) are now formally part of these corporations, bringing them under standard urban planning and infrastructure protocols.
The Jurisdiction of the Corporation is spread over 4 districts - Hyderabad district, part of Medchal-Malkajgiri, Ranga Reddy and Sangareddy districts.
As of 2025, GHMC limits extend to 650 sq. km with 6 zones with 30 circles which is further divided into 150 wards.
GHMC is one of the hyper endemic regions for dengue in Telangana where frequent dengue epidemics have been occurring. Dengue is a serious public health problem in Hyderabad. The June-July period typically marks the beginning of the dengue season, and other vector-borne diseases as well.
