A Postal Index Number or PIN or Pin code is a code in the post office numbering or post code system used by India Post, the Indian postal administration. The code is six digits long.
The PIN Code system was introduced on 15 August 1972. By 2025, the total number of pin codes is projected to exceed 20,000. Each PIN is mapped to exactly one delivery post office which receives all the mail to be delivered to one or lower offices within its jurisdiction, all of which share the same code.
India has the largest Postal Network in the world. For providing postal services, the whole country has been divided into 23 postal circles. The Mumbai GPO is the largest post office in India.
On an average, a Post Office serves an area of 21.22 Sq. Km and a population of 8221 people.
ISRO's Bhuvan website has a Post Office search page that allows you to locate post offices and pin codes across India using an interactive map.
Government of India has also released official pin code boundaries.
On May 27, 2025, Indian Post launched a 10-digit unique identification number called DIGIPIN, assigned to every address in India based on geo-coordinates. A draft approach paper on the Digital Address Code was also released by Indian Post for public feedback.
