Ponduru Khadi

Ponduru is a village located 30 km from Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh​ famous for its khadi. 

The handspun and handwoven khadi from this region boasts a fine 125 count, reflecting its exceptional quality. Renowned for its finesse, this fabric is now exported to various corners of the world.

Ponduru khadi is produced from short staple hill variety cotton​. The cotton is pest resistant, allowing for chemical-free farming​

Unique Production Process

Ginning separates cotton fiber from seeds using the jawbone of the Valuga fish, which is indigenous and exclusive to the area​

After ginning, the process includes fluffing the cotton, waste removal, slivering and carding​

The slivers are kept in dried banana stems​

The cotton is finally hand-spun into fine Khadi

Ponduru is one of the only places where the single spindle charkha with 24 spokes can still be found.

The traditional art form is in danger of becoming extinct.
